Do You Need Batteries?

Have you ever needed two AA batteries? The experience, for me, usually involves a trip to the local store to grab some only to find they don’t sell batteries by the pair (if you know of somewhere that does, please let me know). Now we begin to price shop the batteries. First thing that comes to mind is the “value” pack at only $145.00 for ten AA batteries. Since I only have one item in my house that needs two AA batteries, that would be overstocking. Next comes the one with the bunny that keeps on going and going and going.  Still a little pricy for the battery budget. Finally, I spot an odd looking battery with a lime green cover that is on sale for $1.50 a four-pack. SOLD!  I arrive at my house and place two of my odd looking batteries with the lime green cover into my hair trimmer and begin the process of trimming. At first the batteries are working like a champ, the trimmer is going full force. However, within a minute, the trimmer begins to slow down and eventually barely moves the blades back and forth. The battery has expired. It is at this time that I make a trip to the local store and purchase trimmers that plug into the wall.

Sometimes our spiritual life is like that of the batteries. Perhaps, we are at a place where we are tired from the busyness of life. We give all we have to grow spiritually, but we burn out quickly. Perhaps, we are like the bunny battery. We are ok doing things we have always done, and we are ok with where we are spiritually. Yet we have no drive to grow, and we just keep going and going and going.

We are called to grow within our faith! We know this as Sanctification! That is, by God’s Grace, we grow deeper in relationship with God so that we may be the Hands and Feet of Christ in the world! By relying on our own initiative, we are like the batteries in the story. That is, we will either burn out quickly, or keep going and eventually burn out not reaching the goal of perfection. However, if we are plugged into a consistent power source outside ourselves, we have hope. Hope for longevity and growth. That spiritual power source we plug into is the Holy Spirit-a gift from Christ which leads, guides and directs our spiritual path.

Let us pray to experience the Spirit within our lives each day. I believe others will notice as we connect with the Holy Spirit. I believe as we connect with the Holy Spirit you will have a spark for Christ that is contagious. So, let’s have fun in our faith! Let’s get plugged in and go shock folks!

“…grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”- 2 Peter 3:18
